Business context

Healthcare quality is a critical concern for patients, policymakers, and providers themselves. To better understand the factors influencing hospital performance, this analysis explores patterns in hospital ratings and operational characteristics across the United States. Using a robust dataset of hospitals, I firstly conduct an exploratory data analysis (EDA) to uncover insights that can guide improvements in healthcare delivery. I will than focus my analysis on 5 key business questions, which can be found in the full code below

Tools used: SQL, Jupyter Notebook, Python (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, and Seaborn)

Conclusion

This analysis reveals clear patterns in hospital performance across the United States. Geographic differences show that some states consistently achieve higher average ratings than others, highlighting regional diversity. Smaller hospitals generally tend to receive higher overall quality ratings, though excellent and poor care can be found at any size.
Ownership type also impacts quality: voluntary non-profit and government hospitals typically outperform proprietary hospitals in overall ratings and patient experience. Among the factors influencing overall rating, patient experience shows the strongest positive correlation, and therefore be the most important aspect for hospitals aiming to improve quality.
Finally, capacity and staffing management present a balancing act. While many hospitals operate below full capacity, achieving efficiency must be weighed against maintaining high quality and patient centered care.
